Now that there’s awards for dogs in the movies, perhaps it’s time to give some thought to the winner of the category - Best Dachshund in Movies, Ever. (In the spirit of the fat guy on the Simpsons - Comic Book Guy (real name Jeff Albertson) - who’s a movie nerd and runs the Springfield shop selling fan paraphenalia…)
So I sat down and made a list of contenders - that is, films I know that have dachshunds in them.
And I came up with the following:
· National Lampoon’s European Vacation with Chevy Chase features a zany wire-haired dachshund who jumps off the Eiffel Tower to chase a French beret – and lands in a pool of water below the tower!
· The Truman Show. One of the things that arouses the suspicion of Truman (Jim Carrey) is the repeated appearance of a smooth-haired standard dachshund in the town centre.
· Bittersweet Bundle of Misery . Ok. I admit it. It’s not a film per se, but the pop video by Graham Coxon of the song Bittersweet Bundle of Misery features a black and tan dachshund that listens to him play a song and dances with an attractive model, who then walks off from the green (was it Primrose Hill?) with the dog. Graham Coxon told big feet that in fact the video involved two dachshunds – professional pooches!

· There was a Walt Disney film called ‘The Ugly Dachshund’ . Not one of the world’s cinematic classics, I’m afraid….
· The dachshund in Mrs Henderson Presents - seen often in the arms of Dame Judy Dench, awoof!
Can you think of any others?
Please bark in and let me know.

Hi Archie,
Hello from chilly Sydney. As promised, we are back.
We cannot remember a dackie appearing in the Truman Show - must take a video/DVD out and look for it.
We like the lifestyle of a dackie called Otto that appears (very briefly) twice in a movie called “Avanti!”. It’s a movie shot in Amalfi with Jack Lemmon and Juliet Mills and Otto is at this posh resort hotel spending his summer holiday! Hmmm that’s how WE (and our Mummy) would love to spend our holiday.
Bye for now,
Barney and Monty - little red smooth dackies

The dachshund in Manhattan by Woody Allen was called Waffles. What a great doggy name!

Petey, the 5 yr old dachshund with a black brindle, found another doxie movie! “Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties” features a standard wire haired dachshund. Petey also reports that the first Garfield movie also features a wire-haired dachshund.

Just me, Archibald. But I thought I’d add to the ballot for ‘Cutest Dachshund in Cinema’ the animated badger hound who features - albeit rather briefly - in Walt Disney’s classic The Lady and the Tramp.
