Of interest to all those with houndishness in their hearts is the fact that the common ancestor of all dogs, cats, bears, raccoon, fox, hyena, jackals and civets is a little beasty known as the Miacis.

The Miacis was a five-clawed, meat-eating, weasel-like tree climber. (I know this will please Specs! Deep down the ancestral path we’re kindred folk, awoof~miaow!)
Mr. Miacis appeared around 50 million years ago and of course — as ancestor to the dog — was a wholly successful animal.
Miacis’ predecessors include the Creodont from 60 million years ago, and who was extinct by around 5.2 million years. The Creodont was from the northern hemisphere of the globe and is a possible ancestor of Miacids.

Before this we have the common ancestor of all mammals - a creature known Eomaia scansoria - who appeared around 128 million years ago — and lead to the formation of modern placental mammals. That means the development of animals that give birth as opposed to laying eggs or spawn, as do fish and frogs.
The Eomaia scansoria, from fossil remains, is thought to have looked a little like a modern dormouse, which climbed small shrubs in Liaoning, China.
