Turrean, the most beautiful of Goddesses, was meant to have been turned into a scruffy Irish wolfhound by a jealous faery queen, Uchtdealbh. But somehow the spell was flawed.
Instead of turning Turrean into something scruffy, she was the most magnificent hound on earth.
Turrean was kept prisoner (Awoooo!) at the faery’s home in Galway Bay. Later she and her two sons, Bran and Sgeolon, were rescued by her brother, Fionn MacCumhal, the great warrior-chief.
Story adapted from one by Deborah Anne Mac Gillivray.
Turrean’s sons retained their houndish shape for the rest of their lives.
One day while hunting with warrior-chief Fionn, they came upon a beautiful red deer that the hounds refused to attack. The deer followed them back to the Dun, and when it passed through the gates, a mallachd (curse) was broken and she was transformed into a beautiful woman, Sabd, who became Fionn’s wife.
Superwoof to the magical Irish hounds! In days of old all living things had spirit. Goddesses and maidens hiding in the shape of hounds and deer. If only it were still so today!
