An advertisement for a digital Canon camera in the USA features female tennis star Maria Sharapova.

The ad-makers wanted to show the ‘real’ Sharapova, and wouldn’t you know it? After her love of tennis what Maria loves best in the world is her male Pomeranian dog called Dolce…

The ad actually uses a stand-in for Dolce (who doesn’t like to travel much). Sharapova said the stand-in was very much like her pet pooch, and the ad uses an amusing voice-over so that Maria and Dolce are shown in conversation.

Apparently there were great technical debates as to whether they should use a Russian or Italian accent for Dolce’s voice-over, but even though Dolce is undeniably a Russian speaking canine, Italian was chosen (presumably as it would be more recognisable and familiar to the target American audience). Shame!
