A saying that draws on the persistence and endurance of your average hound is the (not-so-flattering and yet pleasant-sounding all the same) term ‘Booze-hound.’

Dog

The implication is that a ‘booze-hound’ is one who persistently and continuously searches out something to drink. In other words, a drunk. For example, when the former Russian president and notorious booze-hound Boris Yeltsin died he was called a booze-hound and a drunk in a Rolling Stone Magazine obituary.

Hhmmnnn… What are we still learning about the association in the human vocabulary about the relation between things doggish and things human?

In terms of plants we unearthed that plants known as ‘dog’ or ‘hound’ plants tend to be scentless. And also largely wildflowers and wild flowering and berried shrubs. Dog plants are wild things. Weeds, even. Often without scent (which is funny, really, when you think ’bout it). But always tenacious. In character terms, we’d call this determined. Or dedicated.

But there are no hard and fast rules. Houndish persistence and tenacity can be good or bad. Which leaves the original question of what the relation between hounds and humans is, when humans attach doggish senses to human words, sayings and expressions.

Oh well. We’re having fun looking at all the different doggish sayings. And it seems there’s no chance of running short of sayings to consider, so plentiful are instances of dog and hound-inspired language.
