Bow wow wow! The dog walk of fame has come to London!
Canine stars of the silver screen have finally been immortalised with their very own walk of fame in Battersea Park, London.
The first inductees were six dogs chosen by public vote from a shortlist that included Lassie, Toto of “The Wizard of Oz,” cartoon superdog Gromit and Tintin’s trusty companion, Snowy.
The winners, announced Nov. 5, received a permanent plaque in Battersea Park, south London. The location is pawfully fitting, as Battersea Dogs Home, Britain’s largest and best-known home for abandoned dogs, is not far from the Park.
Other Hollywood hounds on the November 2007 shortlist of 15 canines drawn up by a panel of film and dog experts included Bullseye from Oliver Twist and Fang from the Harry Potter films.
The award is the first of its kind, and will hopefully set a trend for more honoured hounds in the future. The walk of fame is sponsored by the Kennel Club and television channel Sky Movies.
The Doggy Walk of Fame follows a growing trend to recognise the place of pooches in human lives. For example, in late November 2007 the first-ever Fido awards took place — which have been called by some the canine equivalent of the Academy Awards. Among the leading contenders are five corgis who starred alongside Oscar winner Helen Mirren in “The Queen.”
And if you’re wondering why I haven’t told who won… well… let’s just say it’s incentive for all you hounds to get out to Battersea and take a look for yerselves! Grrwooof!
