This painting was done by Carlo Carrà, an influential Italian painter, in 1926. His style is often referred to as ‘metaphysical painting.’ Carrà (1881— 1966) was an Italian painter, a leading figure of the Futurist movement that flourished in Italy during the beginning of the 20th century.

Metaphysical painting is a style of painting that flourished mainly between 1911 and 1920 in the works of the Italian artists Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà.

These painters used representational but incongruous imagery to produce disquieting effects on the viewer. Their work strongly influenced the Surrealists in the 1920s.

Carrà was highly involved in the politics of his day and it is perhaps regrettable that he supported fascism and was himself as a young man an anarchist. Youth was no excuse, however, and as he aged his views are said to have become increasingly reactionary, and was a strong advocate of nationalism.

Even though his politics and personal views may have been less than desirable, this is nevertheless a nice, calm, wistful painting. The muted tones. The quiet understanding between the woman and the hound. Hhmmn… Makes me think of the Italian hills…

Which leads me to wonder when the feet will take me on a road trip through the alps, as promised? Hhhmmnn… The stuff of dreams. Until the day comes when it is the stuff of fondest memories.

P.S.: This isn’t the only painting that Carra did that featured dogs. As the title of this blog wrongly suggests. There are other paintings with other dogs. Awoof!
