A while back yours’ truly featured a Newshound article on a sled dog race, the Iditarod, held in Alaska.
…I thought it sounded like a lot of doggish fun. After all, there are whole breeds of dogs such as the Canadian Eskimo Dog who have been used and bred for winter hardiness and days and days of running and sledding.
So it was a bit of a surprise when one of my friendly readers filled out a feedbark form compelling me to consider dog sledding as cruel to dogs. They suggested visiting the Sled Dog Action Coalition website.
I leave it to you to take a quick peek and make up your own houndish mind. As for myself, I can only thank Margery Glickman for bringing the light of evidence to my thoughts and feelings about sled dogs. Even though I had to admit I’m tempted to say something along the lines of ‘well — REAL dog sledders of the two-legged kind are much more attached, appreciative and loving of the four-leggeds in their lives…’ A temptation, alas, that no doubt is misguided in the extreme.
