Dog

I’ve heard it said that Cat Stevens wrote this about a dachshund he found tied to a post when he was young. When nobody claimed the dog, the young Cat took the little dog home.

Between you and me, I have my doubts that it was a dachshund. Certainly the rumour is not upheld by the cover art I’ve been able to dig up.

Despite my doubts about the dachshund part of this story, good old groovy Cat most certainly did write a song about his dog. And as it happens, this little happy/sad ditty is currently being used by an advertising campaign running on television. Awoof!

I love my dog as much as I love you
All he asks from me is the food to give him strength
All he ever needs is love and that he knows he’ll get
So, I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through.

All the pay I need comes shining through his eyes
I don’t need no cold water to make me realize that
I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through.
Na, na, na, na, na, na, nana…

I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through.
But you may fade, my dog will always come through.

Awwoooooo! This is a bit of a sad song, it must be admitted.

One would think that love — real love — is generous. It asks more of us. And has staying power.
