Last year at the world’s largest dog show Cruft’s, there was a new category for winners: the ‘British Dog of the Century’.
And to be perfectly honest (which I do my best, always, to be), it’s a prize that stumps my small doggish mind. Does that mean that it’s only awarded once every hundred years? But then again, every single year will have it’s eventual, logical, predictable centenary. So is it an annual ‘centenary’ award? Grrwwwooooo….
The competition was stiff, with such notable dogs in the running as Dr Who’s K-9, and Dougal from the Magic Roundabout. Also running was Roly the Poodle from EastEnders.
Q: Who won the title as ‘British Dog of the Century’?
Hint: He’s won other awards, and is a canny canine inventor….
A: Who else could have been named British Dog of the Century but Gromit of Wallace & Gromit fame?
Following a vote held on the Pedigree stand throughout all four days at Crufts, Gromit, star of the Aardman Animations Wallace and Gromit, has been named British Dog of the Century.
Thousands of votes were cast through an interactive computer programme and Gromit managed to beat off some fierce competition.
The eight dogs of the final line-up included Dougal from the Magic Roundabout, Goldie the Golden Retriever from Blue Peter, K-9 from Doctor Who, Roly the Poodle from EastEnders, Shep the Border Collie from Blue Peter, Well’ard, another Albert Square dog. and Spot the cartoon puppy.
Upon hearing the news Wallace was heard to comment “I often thought Gromit was a pedigree at heart - well done lad!”
Nick Parke, creator of Wallace and Gromit said “Well this is obviously flattering with such tough competition - I always knew Gromit would win something at Crufts. I don’t think he’s quite Best in Show material but he’s definitely a star in the eyes of the public which is great news.”
Superwoof Gromit! You’ve done it again!
Oh yeah.. And many happy returns, dear Gromit. It’s your birthday, this 12th of February. Awoof!
