Van Morrison — George Ivan Morrison on his passport — was born August 31, 1945. The legendary Irish singer, songwriter, author, poet and multi-instrumentalist, has been a professional musician for more than four decades. He plays a variety of instruments, including the guitar, harmonica, keyboards, drums and saxophone. Not to mention that distinctive smooth growling voice…
Van Morrison’s “characteristic growl” is a mix of throaty folk, blues, Irish, scat, and Celtic influences. Some say he is one of the most unusual and influential vocalists in the history of rock ‘n roll. Critic Greil Marcus is on record as audatiously saying “no white man sings like Van Morrison.”
“Van the Man” rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Northern Irish band Them, penning their seminal 1964 hit “Gloria.” A few years later, Morrison left the band for a successful solo career.
With your hound dog by your side
And your arms stretched out open wide
I wanna keep you satisfied in the morning sun
COME RUNNING
By the side of the tracks where the train goes by
The wind and the rain will catch you, you will sigh
Deep in your heart
Then you’ll come a-running to me
You’ll come a-running to me
Well you watch the train go ’round the bend
Play in dust and dream that it will never end
Deep in your heart
You’ll come a-running to me
You’ll come a-running to me
Said, hey, come a-running to me
Oh, come a-running to me
Hey, yeah, come a-running to me
Said, hey, come a-running to me
Oh, come a-running to me
Hey, yeah, come a-running to me
Van Morrison’s album Moondance (1970) features:
And It Stoned Me
Moondance
Crazy Love
Caravan
Into the Mystic
Come Running
These Dreams of You
Brand New Day
Everyone
Glad Tidings
With your hound dog by your side
And your arms stretched out open wide
I wanna keep you satisfied in the morning sun
By my side, come on, come on run
And you kick the sand up with your heels
You think to yourself how good it feels
Put away all your walking shoes
Then you come running to me
Now you come running to me
I said, hey, come a-running to me
Oh, come a-running to me
Hey, yeah, come a-running to me

Well, my my my….. This is love’s highest pitch, hound dogs and all! Amazing how he got it so right! Right down to the happiness of having sand between one’s toes…! Woof!
And, of course after hound dogs are considered, what the whole thing is predicated on — just as in the story of Solomon and Sheba in the Song of Songs — is an essential separation.
L’approchement — l’apprivoisation — (as in Le Petit Prince) can only happen by way of separation. A little prince and a rose. A boy and a girl. A boy and a fox. A girl and hound. No matter. With a great big world in between…
For there to be a coming together. A meeting. A reaching point. There must be a not-togetherness. A separateness…. And mutual attraction….
Superwoof to Van Morrison and his soul-felt singing!
