The BBC have officially pulled out of their traditional agreement to broadcast the events at Crufts after a row about over-breeding of pedigree dogs.
Officials at the Kennel Club claimed the BBC had requested that some dog breeds be banned from taking part in the world’s biggest (and previously most illustrious) dogshow. The conditions reputed to be requested by the BBC were deemed unacceptable to the Kennel Club — hence the breakdown of relations and the axing of the broadcasting of the show.
The difficulties follow from controversy over a BBC documentary which reported that over-breeding had caused major health problems in breeds — including bulldogs, boxers, pugs and King Charles spaniels.
The BBC are not alone. The RSPCA also pulled out of Crufts after the programme was shown.
Kennel Club chairman Ronnie Irving said that the Kennel Club are “obviously disappointed.” Irving said the Kennel Club were working hard to improve the health of pedigree dogs and accused the BBC of not taking account of their efforts.
Sad news for dogs around the world! I wonder if any other broadcaster will fill the gap… I know I for one will miss watching the agility dogs, as well as all the other handsome contenders.
While it seems evident, clear and true that the Kennel Club weren’t doing enough to ensure adequate conditions of their ‘registered breeders’, it does seem harsh (and perhaps counter-effective?) to shut out the Kennel Club. Surely the way forward is better communication with other parties — not less. Awoof!
And goodness knows that if the world’s most famous dog club has much of its funding cut, their ability to improve the lives and conditions of pedigree dogs within their control is much diminished, rather than being strengthened and bolstered. Hhhmmmnnn…
