If you’re lucky enough to be visiting the MOMA in New York City, you might just turn a corner in their gallery and happen upon this handsome hound. Sculpture by Alberto Giacometti (’Dog’), 1951/1957.
Alberto Giacometti 1901-1966. Swiss sculptor. He began to draw, paint and sculpt at an early age. Studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva 1919-20 and in Italy 1920-1. He moved to Paris in 1922 and his first one-man show was held in Zurich in 1927. Giacometti experimented with many different styles, and he participated in the Surrealist movement between 1930/1935. From 1935 to 1947 he did not exhibit any work at all. His characteristic style emerged in 1947, when he started to work in figurations which were very thin and very tall. Giacometti was awarded First Prize for Sculpture at the Pittsburgh International in 1961, and again at the Venice Biennale in 1962. He died in 1966. Some of his work is on display at the Tate Modern in London, England.
