A recent survey by the Department of Local Government in New South Wales, Australia, revealed that the Maltese terrier is one of the top choices of pet in the area.

This may be because the dogs are very companionable and are very much lap dogs. One local woman who keeps company with a terrier called Bubbles, says that “Bubbles is very much a lap dog.” “Maltese dogs will jump on your lap any chance they get.

“And they are good little watchdogs as well. If Bubbles sees anything suspicious or a stranger she will bark at them.”

Other local favourites are Staffordshire bull terrier, and working dogs.

Local Government Minister Barbara Perry said there were more than 1.36 million pet dogs in NSW.

Top place for the most favourite dog was, somewhat predictably, the Labrador retriever (which is also the most popular dog in the much larger USA).
