Dog

The story of a legendary Norwegian sea dog, based at Montrose during World War II, is to be told on the BBC’s The One Show in a broadcast on Thursday 21 May at 7pm. All those with heroic doggishness in their hearts: set your television recording devices now!

Bamse, a wonderfully tempered Saint Bernard, was the noble companion of Captain Hafto of the Norwegian Navy, and went to sea with him on the minesweeper Thorodd during World War II.

During those days Bamse was involved in many dramatic, and sometimes comic, adventures — like the time he was working as the ship’s guard dog, and had been told not to admit any person to the ship, which led him, obediently, to refuse admittance to the ship of the Captain (and his favourite companion!). The One Show presenter Ellie Harrison visited Montrose and Monifieth talking to Norwegian minesweeper veteran Herman Eilertsen and Montrose woman Jessie Paton who, as a child, knew the dog and attended his funeral in the town. The resulting film is undoubtedly going to be well worth watching.
