The Amazing Adventures of Archibald Esq.

The Bulldog & the Dachshund

This war time poster clearly dates from World War II and is part of the British propaganda campaign — along with other such posters, political cartoons.

Dog

One of the most remembered of these campaigns is surely the ‘Grow for Victory’ campaign. In those days frugality was king.

Doing without for others and for all. As was also a marked tendency to seeing things in black and white, bad and good, one thing or another. German or British, for example.

Happy Howl’o'we’en

Dog

As you may or may not know (but how could you not know?), it’s customary to dress up on Hallowe’en — known to us hounds as howl’o'ween — Awooooo!

This year I’ve decided I’d like to dress up as a skunk. Last year the howl’o'ween party was cancelled due to rain. I was going to go as a ghost-dog, complete with old pillow case cut up in the classical style of a Pacman ghost… And I never got to wear my ghost-dress.

Oktoberfest & an old American Postcard

I thought this amusing postcard would be just the thing to celebrate Oktoberfest — a celebration of all things beer and sausage. Although the image here is American as opposed to the traditional German Oktoberfest image, it nevertheless is fitting, as it evokes industrialisation…

Happy June Awoof!

Happy June one and all! May the sunny days be plentiful, and may the rainy days bring brightly coloured rainbows!

I don’t like rain

As you are most likely aware, I don’t much like the rain, and am even willing to forgo a constitutional walk or two to avoid getting drenched in the rain. Maybe it’s ’cause my legs are so short. Maybe it’s ’cause my belly gets wet.

Snuppy’s Birthday!

It’s Snuppy’s birthday on the 25th of April. You remember Snuppy, the cloned Afghan hound?

Bona, also cloned, was born on 18 June. The scientific plan was to clone two separate dogs, male and female, and see whether they would be capable of reproducing.

Although ‘created’ by the now-disgraced cloning expert Hwang Woo-Suk of South Korea, the work of his team in creating Snuppy has been verified by SNU and other authorities.

SuperWoof to Saint Patrick

May the blessing of light be on you - light without and light within.
May the blessed sunlight shine on you like a great peat fire, so that stranger and friend may come and warm his paws at it.
And may light shine out of the two eyes of you, like a candle set in the window of a house, bidding the wanderer come in out of the storm.
And may the blessing of the earth be on you, soft under your paws as you pass along the roads, soft under you as you lie out on it, tired at the end of day; and may it rest easy over you when, at last, you lie out under it.
May it rest so lightly over you that your soul may be out from under it quickly; up and off and wagging its tail on its way to God.
And now may the Lord bless you, and bless you kindly. Amen. Awoof!

As you most probably know — today is Saint Patrick’s Day. The Patron Saint of Ireland. Though the day often descends to the likes of drinking green beer (yeeauucck!) and wearing goofy hats and other silly things — it wasn’t always so.

So here’s a nice Gaelic blessing — for all those Irish hounds.

VIP Pooch

Dog

Don’t forget to do something special for the Very Important Pooch in your life this Valentine’s Day.

Personally I recommend treating your sweet-hound with a nice bit of roasted pigs’ ear.

But rawhides are also acceptable. As are long rambling walks in the park. And kisses, of course.

Thoughts of snow

Dog

Happy New Year, Awoof! I hope you all had a wonderful festive season, and that your heads are now clear and focused on your new years’ resolutions. Mine is to have more fun this year than last year. Even though the feet were hoping my resolution would be to learn, finally, to put my toys back in my toybox!

This vintage postcard showing dachshunds in sleds and on skis is fun. Making me wish, almost improbably, that there was more snow in London than there is….

Travel Hound: Reasons to Visit Edinburgh

Dog

Not only is Edinburgh one of the cherished places of the renowned doggish author Alexander McCall Smith, it is also home to Scotland’s leading visitor attraction — The Edinburgh Castle.

The Edinburgh Castle is a world-famous icon which attracts 1.2 million visitors a year – making it far and away the most popular paid-for visitor attraction in the land. And that’s no surprise given it’s magnificent appearance, rich history, not to mention that there is so much to do and see once you get inside.

Dog

There’s enough to do and see at Edinburgh Castle to fill an entire day. Among the top attractions are a display of the Scottish crown jewels, and the Great Hall, Laich Hall, King’s Dining Room and St Margaret’s Chapel. On display are some of the most remarkable medieval rooms and buildings where kings, queens and great nobles wined, dined and worshipped.

For those with houndishness in their souls they will be gladdened to know that also at the Edinburgh Castle there is a Dog Cemetery – which is the last resting place of regimental mascots and the faithful friends of many officers.

Cu Sith: the Scottish Green Faerie Dog

Dog

Cu Sith is the name of the legendary green dog of faerie purported to inhabit the highlands of Scotland.

It is said that Cu Sith was larger than a bull, with a long, braided tail, and was intent upon driving fertile women into faerie mounds in order to provide milk for those within.
