Sound Hound: The Roches

Dog

Crash lyrics

since he’s gone away
i’m a sad dog… lie around all day
no bowl of water for me

i’m asleep… let me be
train on the railroad track singing oo oo oo
as if i didn’t know that he’s never coming back

his warm and crazy love
that’s what… i want some of

he sure did know… how to wag my tail
since he’s been gone… i’m in dog jail

Dog

Roy Orbison’s Hound Dog Man lyrics (1979)

Hey, hound dog man,
Where you been now, where you been?
I wish that you were back,
It was too good to ever end.
Once in a while someone like you
Will give everything for what you wanted to do.

Elvis Presley died in his Memphis mansion on 16 August 1977, at the age of 42. Elvis is one of the world’s most famous rock stars ever.

Sound Hound: Louis’ Gone Fishing

Dog

This little Louis Armstrong ditty was done as a duet with Bing Crosby.

Two greats of the greats. And wouldn’t you know it…? A hound dog called Cindy features in the song…. Awoooo!

Gone fishin’ (bah-boo-dah-do-dah-do-dah-do)

Got your hound dog by your side (that’s old Cindy-Lou goin’ with me)

Gone fishin’ (mmm-hmm-hmm-hmm-hmm)

I’ll tell you why I can’t find you
Every time I go out to your place…

You gone fishin’ (well how you know)
Well there’s a sign upon your door (uh-huh)
Gone fishin’ (I’m real gone man)
You ain’t workin’ anymore (could be)
There’s your hoe out in the sun
Where you left a row half done
You claim that hoein’ ain’t no fun (well I can prove it)
You ain’t got no ambition

Sound Hound: Four Men and a Dog

Four Men and a Dog are legends in the traditional Irish musical community. They have long been recognised as masters of traditional Irish music with a slight twist, whether it’s a touch of bluegrass, country or polka. Their shows elicit laughter, mirth, as well as dancing.

Four Men and a Dog made their debut performance as a band in Murphy’s Bar, Dungiven, Co. Derry in 1990 before going on to steal the show at the Belfast Folk Festival later that year, with a high-energy approach that combines furious traditional dance tunes with irreverent new music and inimitatible covers.

Barking Mad, their debut album, won the coveted award for Album of the Year from Folk Roots magazine in 1991, marking the first time that an Irish group had ever won the prize.

SuperWoof to Four Men and a Dog!

Sound Hound: Van Morrison on Love ‘n Dogs

Dog

Van Morrison — George Ivan Morrison on his passport — was born August 31, 1945. The legendary Irish singer, songwriter, author, poet and multi-instrumentalist, has been a professional musician for more than four decades. He plays a variety of instruments, including the guitar, harmonica, keyboards, drums and saxophone. Not to mention that distinctive smooth growling voice…

Van Morrison’s “characteristic growl” is a mix of throaty folk, blues, Irish, scat, and Celtic influences. Some say he is one of the most unusual and influential vocalists in the history of rock ‘n roll. Critic Greil Marcus is on record as audatiously saying “no white man sings like Van Morrison.”

“Van the Man” rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Northern Irish band Them, penning their seminal 1964 hit “Gloria.” A few years later, Morrison left the band for a successful solo career.

With your hound dog by your side
And your arms stretched out open wide
I wanna keep you satisfied in the morning sun

COME RUNNING

By the side of the tracks where the train goes by
The wind and the rain will catch you, you will sigh
Deep in your heart
Then you’ll come a-running to me
You’ll come a-running to me

Sound Hound: Cat Stevens’ Dachshund

Dog

I’ve heard it said that Cat Stevens wrote this about a dachshund he found tied to a post when he was young. When nobody claimed the dog, the young Cat took the little dog home.

Between you and me, I have my doubts that it was a dachshund. Certainly the rumour is not upheld by the cover art I’ve been able to dig up.

Despite my doubts about the dachshund part of this story, good old groovy Cat most certainly did write a song about his dog. And as it happens, this little happy/sad ditty is currently being used by an advertising campaign running on television. Awoof!

I love my dog as much as I love you
All he asks from me is the food to give him strength
All he ever needs is love and that he knows he’ll get
So, I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through.

A little bit of life.

Sound Hound: Neil Young’s Ode to a Hound

Dog

Just as with visual artists - painters, sculptors, photographers and the like — songsters of genius also tend to have puppyhearts and houndishness in their bones.

Indeed, it is a little Archibald hypothesis of mine that houndishness in the heart is a sign of true genius!

That old King was a friend of mine
Never knew a dog
that was half as fine

Neil Young is one such songster whose repetoire includes songs in honour of things houndish. His Harvest album (1992) contains an ode to his hound dog called King.

Old King

King went a-runnin’ after deer
Wasn’t scared of jumpin’ off the truck in high gear

King went a-sniffin’ and he would go
Was the best old hound dog I ever did know.

I had a dog and his name was King
I told the dog about everything

Sound Hound: Loving You Like a Hound Dog Loves His Bone

Dog

Jim Reeves was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1967. He stands out as one of the most distinctive singers in the history of country music.

His warm baritone sound was a major component of the sophisticated “Nashville Sound” that emerged during the late 1950s and early 1960s and boosted country music to new commercial heights while strengthening Nashville’s role as a music center.

Overnight

I met you on the Sunday night by that Monday morning
Overnight although I wondered overnight what’s wrong with me
Overnight love walked right in and shook me like a tree

The album ‘Distant Drums’ (released 1966) features the song ‘Overnight’, which employs the image of a dog and it’s bone as a figuration of love — Awoof!
Oh I sat down when I got home and gave my heart a warnin’
Overnight I dreamed about you overnight while counting the sheep
Overnight I fell for you so hard I couldn’t sleep

All night long I wished you were my own
And when I came to I was huggin’ you like a hound dog hugs a bone

Have a Very Woooful Christmas!

The world’s first all-canine band is heading for a Christmas No 1 in Germany. The Little Wolves (Die Kleinen Woelfe), which features Labrador Max amongst others, howl, bark and growl along to Christmas classics like “Jingle Bells” and “O Christmas Tree.” Awooof!

Co-producer Monika Knuth auditioned dozens of dogs before picking the nine most tuneful. “At first, people thought we were crazy when we came up with the idea,” she said. But The Little Wolves’ debut album Spectaculum has sold record numbers online.

The song had been originally recorded by the blues singer Big Mama Thornton in 1953.

Big Mama’s rendition held the top spot on the Billboard rhythm and blues charts for 9 weeks. Awooooof!
